YouTube thumbnail safe zone and size checker

Drop your thumbnail to see its safe zone and check the size, ratio, file size, and format. The safe zone overlay shades practical safe margins: the bottom-right duration corner and a band in from the edges.

Drag and drop works too. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded anywhere.

Upload a thumbnail or paste a link. You get the size, ratio, file-size and format checks, plus optional safe-margin shades on your image.

YouTube thumbnail safe zone and safe margins

YouTube does not publish a pixel safe zone for custom thumbnails. What follows splits their help pages from a practical rule for where to put the subject and the text. The overlay above is the same kind of guide: it shades the duration corner and an edge margin on your image, in the browser. Those shapes are not an official measurement.

The duration sits in the bottom-right

In search and on the home feed, YouTube draws the video duration on top of the thumbnail, in the bottom-right corner. That badge is part of the interface. The thumbnail help pages do not give it a width or a height, so this page does not either. A logo, a face, or a number in that corner is the usual thing that disappears behind it. Leave the corner empty.

Keep text and faces away from the edges

Thumbnails are shown small, and they are not the same crop everywhere. YouTube's thumbnail tips say the image shows up differently across devices, and that any text should use a font that is easy to read. Edges that look fine on the full file get clipped, or turn soft, once the tile is small.

One placement change is documented. YouTube's custom thumbnail help says a vertical video's 16:9 custom thumbnail is replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore, and subscription pages. The custom thumbnail still appears on the watch feed, in watch history, and on non-mobile platforms. The file you upload is not the picture every surface shows. In practice the same image is also shown small, and often cropped, so keep text and faces in from the edges.

Where to put the important parts

Practical rule, not an official spec: put the subject and any words in the middle of the frame, clear of the bottom-right duration corner and clear of the outer edges. YouTube's own design tip is the rule of thirds, with branding and a short line of readable text, and a design that is not too busy. The Duration badge and Edge margin toggles above shade that on your file. They start on, and you can switch either one off.

Once it passes here, see how it competes: test it in a mock YouTube feed next to real videos.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

YouTube's custom thumbnail help page recommends 3840 by 2160 pixels, at least 640 pixels wide, in 16:9, as JPG or PNG. The file-size limit on that page is 2 MB on mobile and 50 MB on desktop. 1280 by 720 still works, and it is the export size this checker treats as the usual target.

What are YouTube thumbnail safe margins?

YouTube does not publish a safe-margin size for custom thumbnails. In the feed, the video duration is drawn over the bottom-right of the thumbnail, so leave that corner clear. Keep text and faces in from the edges too: the image is shown small, and different placements crop or replace it. On a vertical video, YouTube replaces a 16:9 custom thumbnail with an auto-generated 4:5 image on Home, Explore, and Subscriptions. The overlay on this page shades a duration corner and an edge margin as a guide, not as an official template.

Where should text sit so the duration does not cover it?

Out of the bottom-right corner, and in from every edge, in a font that is easy to read. YouTube's thumbnail tips recommend the rule of thirds and a design that is not too busy. There is no official pixel margin. Use the Duration badge and Edge margin toggles above to see that on your own file.

What is the thumbnail safe zone?

A practical name for the middle of the thumbnail, away from the duration in the bottom-right and away from the edges. YouTube does not publish that region in pixels. The overlay marks a duration corner, a bottom bar, rounded corners, and an edge margin. Those marks are a guide, not a spec, and the PNG download is the same guide as a transparent layer for a design tool.

Why does my thumbnail have black bars?

The image is not 16:9, which is the ratio YouTube asks for on video thumbnails. A 4:3 or square image often shows with bars on the sides, and a very wide one with bars on the top and bottom. Crop to 16:9 before exporting. The aspect-ratio check above tells you which way yours is off.

My thumbnail is over 2 MB. How do I shrink it?

On a phone, YouTube's help page sets a 2 MB limit, so export as JPG instead of PNG. On desktop the limit on that page is 50 MB. Keep PNG for flat graphics with hard edges when the file fits.

Can I upload a 4K thumbnail?

Yes. YouTube's help page recommends 3840 by 2160, which is a 4K frame, at 16:9. The file-size limit there is 2 MB on mobile and 50 MB on desktop. 1280 by 720 still uploads and is the size this checker treats as the usual export.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read by your browser and never leaves your computer. Pasting a link fetches the thumbnail YouTube already serves publicly.

Why does a pasted link show a 480×360 image?

YouTube only publishes the 1280×720 file for videos that had a custom thumbnail uploaded at that size. Videos with an auto-generated thumbnail only have the 480×360 version, with black bars, and that is what viewers see too.
